Who does dick grayson end up with

And in Nightwing 78, we get a flashback to their very first meeting and it shows why they were always meant to be soulmates. This flashback dives into Dick's relationship with Alfred as we see key moments where the butler proved to be more of a father to him than Bruce. The incident in question finds an irate Barb in her teens yelling at a bunch of white, privileged kids who are beating up a weaker kid after class.

Luckily, Dick shows up, making it clear he hates the leader, Shelton, who thinks because his dad is rich he can do whatever he wants. As expected, a brawl breaks out with Dick headbutting Shelton and scrapping with the others. The fact they make fun of the Flying Graysons' deaths doesn't bode well as it infuriates Dick even more. And interestingly, Barb jumps into the fight too, because just like Bruce's adoptive son, she hates bullies.

Eventually, the cops arrive and just when Shelton thinks he's going to get off as they're on his dad's payroll, it turns out, Jim Gordon's at the scene.

His guys take the brat in, while Jim drops Dick off. And on the way, we see the romance budding with Dick being teased by Barb about living in the mansion a la Beauty and the Beast. He's preoccupied, though, worried about Bruce's punishment, and trying to brush off her witty comments, not realizing she's going to be the love of his life.

What makes it so cute is how Barb can't even mask her crush, harassing him and telling him if he needs rescuing from the castle, just say the word. But it's not just their chemistry that makes them soulmates, it's how from a young age they stood up for justice. Alfred inculcated in him it's the man under the mask that's the true hero and hearing what Dick did made him so proud.

You can also see Jim beaming with pride over his girl and this is the common bond that saw them get married in Dark Nights: Death Metal. Sure, they've had solid relationships outside of each other but their journey started together, fighting for innocent people who couldn't defend themselves, and it's why ardent fans want to see them get a happy ending together in DC's main continuity.
